ERSB Congratulates All Participants of Recent Landfill Fire Training Course

On November 19-20, 2018, representatives from the Eastern Regional Service Board and fire departments from across the province participated in a landfill fire training course at the Robin Hood Bay Regional Waste Management Facility. The course was instructed in partnership with Dr. Tony Sperling of Landfill Fire Control Inc.

The landfill fire training course was designed to improve the knowledge of individuals that manage municipal solid waste landfills and addresses the mechanics of landfill fires, the detection of landfill fires as well as methods to control landfill fires. Day one of the course included health and safety, communications, risk reduction and fire safety audits. Day two had a field exercise to give landfill staff and firefighters exposure to a real fire situation and the various tactical, logistics and health and safety issues that need to be addressed. Photos from the training and the presentation of a certificate of completion to Mr. Colin Rideout, Field Operations Officer with Eastern Regional Service Board, are available below.

A big congratulations to all participants, including volunteer fire departments and municipalities across the province. Also, a big thank you to our partners at City of St. John's, the NL Association of Fire Services, and the various regional joint councils for helping to get the word out about this valuable opportunity.
