Eastern Regional Service Board Expands Regionalized Services to New Unincorporated Areas
St. John’s, NL. July 21 , 2016 - As part of its ongoing mandate, the Eastern Regional Service Board (ERSB) is continuing to implement waste collection services in un-serviced areas throughout eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.
For an annual fee of $180 - which is designed to cover the cost of the service - all property owners in eastern Newfoundland and Labrador will have access to weekly waste collection, biweekly recyclable collection, bulk pickup and household hazardous waste disposal.
"All real property owners require and use aspects of our services," said Ed Grant, Chair of Eastern Regional Service Board. "If unincorporated property owners do not pay for their service, it means other property owners within municipal boundaries are required to pay extra. We need to keep our province healthy and beautiful. It's up to all of us to take good care of the environment and ensure that generations to come are able to enjoy it just as much as we do."
The ERSB is made up of 20 elected officials and an appointed chair. It remains primarily focused on ensuring high quality, regionalized waste management services and facilities are available to all property owners in eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, and that waste management processes ensure the long term health and safety of residents and the environment.
One municipality that has seen the benefit of this approach is the Town of Holyrood.
"In the past, the Town of Holyrood has experienced waste from outside property owners being left in our town that has to be collected and paid for by our municipality and taxpayers." said Gary Corbett, Chief Administrative Office, Town of Holyrood. "Since the implementation of regionalized waste management services in the neighbouring areas around Holyrood, we have seen a significant decrease in illegal dumping and litter."
