Important update regarding Bulk Collection June 19, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the delivery of services across the province.  There are enormous challenges when scheduling all of the bulk collections that were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Our contractors have stepped up to assist the Board with continuing to provide waste and bulk collection to the communities across the region. ERSB notes that the bulk collections were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, by working together with the contractors we are able to ensure that all communities will now receive 2 bulk collection events in 2020.  The ERSB is pleased to advised that bulk garbage collection events have been added for the following communities:

***Please note these dates are in addition to the already scheduled dates from June 15, 2020 onward***

Bell Island - November 13

Carbonear (East of Bunker's Hill), Flat Rock Road (1.1km between Freshwater and Salmon Cove), Hodgewater Line (main road only) - July 6 

Carbonear (North of Valley Road to and including Bunker's Hill) - July 20 

Carbonear (South of and including Valley Road) - August 10 

Clarke's Beach, Port de Grave Peninsula, Bristol's Hope - Double the permitted volume of bulk garbage will be collected on the scheduled day - August 27

Conception Bay Center (Holyrood, Salmonier Line (no side roads), Deer Park-Vineland Road, Brigus Junction 1.6km) - Double the permitted volume of bulk garbage will be collected on the scheduled day - September 9 

Conception Bay Center (Marysvale, Colliers, Georgetown) - Double the permitted volume of bulk garbage will be collected on the scheduled day - September 23 

Isthmus (Little Heart's Ease, Long Beach, Island Cove, Hodge's Cove, Caplin Cove, Butter Cove, Gooseberry Cove, Southport, Sunnyside, Come by Chance) - July 14

Smith Sound - October 23

Southwest Avalon (Fox Harbour, Ship Harbour, Point Verde, St. Bride's, Cuslett, Point Lance, Branch, Little Barasway, Gooseberry Cove, Great Barasway, Ship Cove, Patrick's Cove, Angle's Cove, Harricott, Colinet, Route 91 (St. Catherine's to Placentia), Route 92 to North Harbour (Both side) - Double the permitted volume of bulk garbage will be collected on the scheduled day - October 9

Bulk Collection update for all Communities in Eastern Newfoundland

As the COVID-19 Alert Level in Newfoundland and Labrador was reduced to Level 3 by the Chief Medical Officer of Health on June 8, 2020, the Eastern Regional Service Board will resume scheduled bulk waste collection commencing on June 15, 2020. The ERSB will continue to work with our contractors to ensure social distancing and personal protective equipment requirements are adhered to.

In response to the reduction of the Alert Level, the ERSB also reopened the ten Waste Recovery Facilities in the Eastern Region on June 2, 2020. These facilities provide residents with the opportunityto drop off non organic household bulk waste.

The ERSB will continue to support all communities under our jurisdiction so we can continue to establish a waste management system that is safe, affordable and provides a tremendous service to allour communities

Re-Opening of Waste Recovery Facilities 

Waste Recovery Facilities in Bay Bulls, Renews-Cappahayden, Placentia, St. Joseph’s, Cavendish, Old Perlican, Harbour Grace, Sunnyside, Whitbourne, and Clarenville will be reopening using a phased approach. 

Beginning June 2, 2020, residents can use the facilities based on the schedule below:

Tuesday, June 2 & 9:  Surnames A – H
Thursday, June 4 & 11:  Surnames I – P
Saturday, June 6 & 13:  Surnames Q – Z

There will be extended hours of operation on your scheduled day:

8:00 – 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Gates close 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.)

We will return to regular hours of operation on June 14, 2020.

Please note:

  • All bagged waste must be in clear (transparent) bags. This is to reduce risk to our employees by minimizing contact with waste materials. Waste in dark (non-transparent) garbage bags will not be permitted on site.
  • Maintain a safe physical distance of 2m (6ft) from staff and other visitors.
  • If you are feeling unwell, stay home.
  • Limit of 2 vehicles allowed on site at a time.
  • Maximum of 2 persons per vehicle allowed on site.
  • Pre-sort materials so it may be offloaded in 10 minutes or less.
  • Anticipate line-ups and delays—please be patient and remain in your vehicle.

Bulk Collection Update

Many of our customers have reached out asking when bulk collection will resume. We continue to monitor the situation and will return to normal operations as soon as it is safe to do so. Following the advice of public health officials, currently it is not safe to provide this service. We understand that service disruptions are challenging for many of our customers and we appreciate your patience during this time.

Waste Recovery Facilities will close March 26, 2020 in response to COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety of employees and the public who avail of our services continues to be our top priority. To reduce the risk of exposing staff and residents to the virus, we have made the decision to close Waste Recovery Facilities until further notice. This applies to the Bay Bulls, Cavendish, Clarenville, Old Perlican, Harbour Grace, Placentia, Renews-Cappahayden, St. Joseph’s, Sunnyside, and Whitbourne Waste Recovery Facilities.

We understand that these closures are challenging for many of our customers. We will continue to monitor the situation and will return to normal operations as soon as it is safe to do so and will provide regular updates.

Note that the Robin Hood Bay Landfill Site and the Clarenville Waste Transfer Stations will remain open for our commercial customers.

Tipping fee increase deferred until August 1, 2020.

This is a difficult and challenging time for our communities, including many businesses. We are pleased to advise that the City of St. John’s has deferred the tipping fee increase scheduled to come into effect April 1, 2020 at Robin Hood Bay Regional Landfill site to August 1, 2020. We are also deferring the planned increase for the Clarenville Transfer Stations. These measures are being taken to help businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bulk Collection cancelled until further notice

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Eastern Regional Service Board is taking measures to proactively help prevent the spread of the virus. Following advice from public health officials, we will be enacting solutions for our contractors to increase social distancing.

All Bulk Garbage Collections scheduled by ERSB are cancelled until further notice. This difficult decision has been made to help protect our contractors and ensure proper social distancing requirements are met.

We will continue to support all communities under our jurisdiction so we can continue to establish a waste management system that is affordable and that provides a tremendous service to all our communities.

Important Update Regarding COVID-19

There is nothing more important to us than our customers, our communities, and our people. Health and safety is always a priority for our teams, now more than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves. Respectful of new public health guidelines, effective March 19, we will be closing our office at 255 Majors Path to the public.

We are also putting several social distancing measures in place to further help reduce the spread of infection. While the office is closed, we will offer front counter service by appointment by calling 579-7960. We ask that you refrain from making an appointment if you show any symptoms of illness or have travelled outside of Canada within the past fourteen days.

If you are worried about paying your bill, we offer flexible payment options by phone and online. We continue to accept payment through Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC, TD, and BMO online banking or by cheque, money order, and credit card by telephone at 579-7960.

The Eastern Regional Service Board will be hosting our board meetings via teleconferencing until further notice and will post all adopted minutes of our meetings to our website.

We are living in unprecedented times, requiring extraordinary efforts to address the situation and we appreciate your support as we navigate through this pandemic together. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, we will continue to monitor and provide updates.
